DrainDispatch is a referral service, not a plumbing contractor. We connect homeowners with independent, licensed plumbing contractors through our partner network. We do not perform plumbing work, we do not set prices, and we never charge homeowners anything — the contractors in our network pay us when we route them a call. Calls are routed on partner coverage and bids, not on a quality ranking.

A slow drain is a blockage that has not finished forming. The restriction is already there, catching a little more each week. That makes it the cheapest moment to deal with it — and the easiest to ignore until it becomes an emergency at an inconvenient hour.

How a contractor actually diagnoses it

  1. They establish whether it is one fixture or several. One is a branch. Several, especially the lowest in the house, is the main.
  2. They time it. A basin that takes thirty seconds to clear is different from one that takes five minutes.
  3. They check the obvious access points first — stopper, strainer, trap.
  4. If the fixture is clear and it is still slow, the restriction is further along and needs a cable or a camera.

Three ways this actually fails

Gradual build-up on the pipe wall

Grease in a kitchen, soap and hair in a bathroom. The effective diameter narrows over months until normal use overwhelms it.

A venting problem

A drain can be perfectly clear and still run slowly if air cannot enter the system behind the water. Tell-tale: it gurgles as it drains.

Insufficient fall or a sag in the pipe

If a run does not drop enough, or has settled into a low spot, it will drain slowly from the day it was installed and no cleaning will change that.

Questions people ask

How do I find slow drains near me?

Call the number on this page and give us your town or ZIP code. We match it against partner coverage and connect you with an independent licensed contractor who works that area. We do not charge you anything — the contractor sets their own price.

Is a slow drain worth calling about?

On its own, it is not urgent. But it is cheaper to clear a restriction than an obstruction, and slow drains do not improve on their own. If several are slow at once, that changes the answer — call.

Why does it gurgle?

Gurgling means air is being pulled through the water seal because it cannot get in through the vent. That points at the vent stack rather than the drain, and it is a different job.

Will a chemical cleaner speed it up?

Sometimes, briefly. It burns a channel through soft material without removing the build-up on the pipe wall, so the drain slows again quickly, and repeated use is hard on older pipe.

It has been slow since we moved in. Is that normal?

No, and it usually means the pipework itself is the problem — not enough fall, too many tight bends, or an undersized run. A camera is the way to confirm it before anyone quotes a repair.

Do enzyme treatments work?

They work slowly and preventively rather than as a fix. They digest organic build-up over weeks, which genuinely extends the interval between blockages in a kitchen line, but they will not clear a drain that is already blocked.

All my drains are slow. What now?

That is a main line symptom and it is more urgent than it feels. Running more water tends to make it worse.

What should it cost?

Published national ranges for a standard cleaning run $147–$352 (Angi), with HomeGuide putting the national average to snake a drain at $216. Context only, not a quote.
